It Gets Better With Time
Corey Jermaine
September 15, 2024 — November 17, 2024

It Gets Better With Time is a solo exhibition of street-style photographs taken on film in Bushwick by Corey Jermaine. This exhibition is accompanied by the release of Jermaine’s second self-published volume, Bushwick Studio Sessions Part 2, which features his studio-based portrait photography.

Jermaine’s street photography captures the varying sensibilities, values, and attitudes expressed through fashion within a cross-section of Bushwick. Directly confronting the lens, the subjects in this exhibition project a level of grit and self-expression that also reveal glimmers of softness and vulnerability. Jermaine’s lens transforms their clothes and the way they’re embodied into public works of art, serving as extensions of this neighborhood’s architecture and the fabric that connects its communities.

Bushwick Studio Sessions Part 2 serves as a transition from the bustling energy of a Brooklyn street to the more serene and controlled environment of the studio. Jermaine approaches the studio setting with an intention for deeper dialogue between photographer and subject to produce images that collaboratively portray the individuality and expressiveness of our neighbors.

Corey Jermaine has been documenting the streets of Bushwick over the past seven years, immersing himself in the unique fashion scene of its vibrant arts community. His work is distinguished by its rawness and intimacy, often capturing the complexity and contradictions within each person, whether in a studio or on the street.

It Gets Better With Time is Corey’s third solo show in NYC. When it comes to what catches Corey's eye as a photographer, he loves when “people use fashion as a way to express themselves and their inner desires or yearnings rather than a way to showcase status, whether that's overt or subtle."
